The artist identifies themselves as a citizen of a world with a wide international background. “Born in Indonesia to Finnish diplomats, Tinnas Enidraj Nimgaj’s family moved to Cuba when Nimgaj was a young child. With stops in Oymyakon, Russia, and Harare, Zimbabwe, Nimgaj is truly a citizen of the world.” The artist’s name is the reverse spelling of surnames of the three members of ArtFarm collaborative group. The entire communication between Tinnas Enidraj Nimgaj and ArtFarm is done through a P.O. Box address in Colorado City. The anonymity of the artist and the sent letters in different handwritings challenge the level of information one wants to share. On one hand, sending handwritten letters seems very personal. On the other, different handwritings make it less individualized.
Prior to entering the container, a full written page followed by a signature space is reminiscent of the agreements that we sign without reading. You are asked to sign a paper and give a valid password. This is the first moment of hesitation. Your identity will remain confidential. Nevertheless, you still feel uncertain to publicly expose a valid password. The way that the artist positions your privacy against your curiosity to receive more information makes you feel both playful and anxious. While you do not want to reveal any of your passwords, you tend to secretly point to them.
The next step is simultaneously disturbing and exciting. The pendant straps almost conceal the interior of the container. As you walk into the space, you are immediately invaded by the white straps making it physically hard to take steps. You try to both protect yourself and clear your path to continue. The hung white straps suggest the amount of information and data that we are exposed to in our everyday lives. At first, it seems like we are in control of the situation. However, the nature of the environment and our insatiable thirst for more information lead us forward.
“A message to our guests:
We truly value our relationship with you, our guests, and know this incident had a significant impact on you. We are sorry. We remain focused on addressing your questions and concerns.” As you are seated and looking backward to the path that you have gone through and the space that you have conquered, you remember the level of your vulnerability for revealing some aspects of your life in order to obtain new information.
