The exhibition “Force of Nature” at the Shemer Art Center, juried by Aimee León, claims to be “a contemporary look at the power of an ancient subject,” but the word “ancient” seems not quite strong enough to capture the vastness of this unknowable force. It positions nature as the direct object of human study, as we are forced to view it through the narrow lens of our perception. Of course, philosophical questions of physics and perception aside, the earth was here before we were and will likely endure long after we are gone.
So, if a tree falls in the woods and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? We are fortunate enough to exist here and now to ponder that question and to bear witness to the forces of nature.
“Force of Nature” is on view May 7 – June 18, 2015 at Shemer Art Center, located at 5005 E. Camelback Rd. in Phoenix. For more information, including hours, visit shemerartcenter.org.
